Conditional Clauses: Real & Unreal Compared
Conditional sentences let you talk about possibilities, wishes, and hypotheticals — a core part of everyday German conversation. Knowing whether to use the indicative (real conditions) or Konjunktiv II (unreal conditions) is what separates B1 learners from beginners.
In this lesson you'll compare both types side by side, learn exactly when and how to use each, and practise through targeted exercises. By the end you'll confidently say both "If I have time, I'll call you" and "If I had more time, I'd travel the world."
Real Conditions (Realbedingungen)
Real conditions describe situations that are possible or likely. Both the wenn-clause and the main clause use the indicative mood — usually present tense for present/future situations.
Structure: Wenn + [subject] + … + [verb at end], [conjugated verb] + [subject] + …
Key rule: When the wenn-clause comes first, the main clause must start with the conjugated verb (inversion).

Notice how the verb (bleibe, mache, besteht) comes immediately after the comma when the wenn-clause leads.
Unreal Conditions (Irrealis — Konjunktiv II)
Unreal conditions describe situations that are hypothetical, contrary to fact, or very unlikely. Both clauses use Konjunktiv II.
Structure: Wenn + [subject] + … + [Konjunktiv II verb at end], [würde + infinitive] OR [Konjunktiv II form]
For common and modal verbs, use their own Konjunktiv II form. For all other verbs, use würde + infinitive in the main clause:

Example: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich reisen. (If I had time, I would travel.)
⚠️ Critical rule: Do not use würde in the wenn-clause. Prefer the direct Konjunktiv II form instead: Wenn ich Zeit hätte — not Wenn ich Zeit würde haben.

Quick test: Ask yourself — Is this situation genuinely possible right now? → Use indicative. Is it imaginary or contrary to current reality? → Use Konjunktiv II.

⚠️ Common Mistakes
Wenn ich würde mehr schlafen, würde ich mich besser fühlen.Wenn ich mehr schlafen würde, würde ich mich besser fühlen.
In any wenn-clause, the conjugated verb must go to the very END of the clause. 'Würde' is the conjugated verb here, so it belongs last — not right after 'ich'.
Wenn ich hätte Zeit, würde ich kommen.Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen.
Konjunktiv II forms follow the same subordinate-clause word order as indicative verbs: the conjugated verb goes at the END. All other elements (objects, adverbs) come before it.
Wenn ich bin müde, schlafe ich früh.Wenn ich müde bin, schlafe ich früh.
The verb 'bin' must come at the END of the wenn-clause. This is a standard German subordinate-clause rule — it applies to real and unreal conditions equally.
Wenn ich wäre du, würde ich nicht warten.Wenn ich du wäre, würde ich nicht warten.
Even in Konjunktiv II, the conjugated verb ('wäre') must be last in the wenn-clause. The predicate complement ('du') comes before the verb, not after it.
