Konjunktiv II Past: hätte … gemacht
The Konjunktiv II past lets you talk about things that didn't happen — regrets, missed opportunities, and hypothetical "what if" scenarios. Once you have this form, you can say things like Ich hätte mehr gelernt (I should have studied more) naturally and confidently.
The good news: the structure is consistent. Take the Konjunktiv II auxiliary — hätte or wäre — and add the past participle. Two moving parts, and you unlock an entire dimension of past expression.
Forming the Konjunktiv II Past
Build the Konjunktiv II past with:
hätte (most verbs) or wäre (motion / state-change verbs) + Partizip II
The choice between hätte and wäre mirrors the Perfekt rule exactly: if a verb takes sein in the Perfekt (gehen → ist gegangen), use wäre here. Everything else uses hätte.

When to Use It
1. Express regret — something you wish had turned out differently:
- Ich hätte mehr Wasser getrunken. → I should have drunk more water.
- Sie hätte früher angerufen. → She should have called earlier.
2. Hypothetical past conditions — the "if" clause of an unreal conditional:
- Wenn ich Zeit gehabt hätte, hätte ich dir geholfen. → If I had had time, I would have helped you.
3. Polite suggestions about the past — what could or should have been done:
- Du hättest früher ankommen können. → You could have arrived earlier.
Word Order in Sentences
The conjugated auxiliary (hätte / wäre) behaves like any finite verb.

⚠️ Common Mistakes
Ich würde das gemacht haben.Ich hätte das gemacht.
English speakers translate "would have done" word-for-word as *würde … haben*, but German uses *hätte/wäre + Partizip II* directly. The *würde*-construction is only for present/future hypotheticals, never for the past.
Ich hätte nach Hause gegangen.Ich wäre nach Hause gegangen.
*gehen* takes *sein* in the Perfekt, so its Konjunktiv II past must also use *wäre*. The same applies to *kommen*, *fahren*, *laufen*, *bleiben*, *werden*, and other movement or state-change verbs.
Wenn ich hätte mehr Zeit, hätte ich geholfen.Wenn ich mehr Zeit gehabt hätte, hätte ich geholfen.
In a *wenn*-clause the auxiliary moves to the very end — after the participle, not before it. Also, you must include the past participle (*gehabt*); you cannot use the bare verb stem as if it were the present Konjunktiv II.
Ich habe das gemacht hätte.Ich hätte das gemacht.
Do not mix Perfekt endings with Konjunktiv II forms. *Habe … gemacht* is real Perfekt (something that happened); *hätte … gemacht* is the hypothetical past (something that didn't happen). Combining both auxiliaries is not grammatical.
