Two-Part Connectors (entweder … oder, sowohl … als auch)
Two-part connectors (zweiteilige Konnektoren) work in matched pairs to link choices, additions, or negations inside a single sentence. Knowing them lets you move beyond basic und/oder and express nuance with far less effort.
In this lesson you will master the four most important pairs — entweder … oder, sowohl … als auch, weder … noch, and nicht nur … sondern auch — together with the word-order traps that catch most English speakers.
The Four Main Pairs at a Glance
Learn each pair as a fixed unit with its English equivalent:

All four pairs can connect nouns, adjectives, infinitives, or full clauses.
Word Order: entweder … oder
German has strict verb-second (V2) order in main clauses. When entweder sits at the very start of a clause, it takes position 1 and the finite verb must come immediately in position 2:
Entweder kommst du mit, oder ich gehe allein. ✓
If you place entweder after the subject (in the middle of the clause), normal subject-verb order is kept:
Du kommst entweder mit, oder ich gehe allein. ✓
Both versions are correct — choose the one that fits your emphasis. The oder clause always follows standard main-clause V2 order.
Verb Agreement: sowohl … als auch and weder … noch
When sowohl … als auch or weder … noch joins two noun-phrase subjects, the combined subject is logically plural — so use a plural verb:

⚠ A singular verb is technically possible in very formal writing, but plural sounds natural and is the safe choice for learners.
nicht nur … sondern auch — Keeping Parallel Structure
The two elements joined by nicht nur … sondern auch must be grammatically parallel (the same type of phrase):

When connecting full clauses, sondern acts as a coordinating conjunction and the verb in the second clause stays in position 2. Always place a comma before sondern.

⚠️ Common Mistakes
Entweder du kommst mit, oder ich gehe allein.Entweder kommst du mit, oder ich gehe allein.
When 'entweder' opens the clause it occupies position 1, so the finite verb must follow immediately in position 2 — before the subject.
Sowohl Anna als auch Peter ist hier.Sowohl Anna als auch Peter sind hier.
'Sowohl … als auch' creates a plural subject (two people). The verb must agree in the plural: 'sind', not 'ist'.
Sie ist nicht nur klug, aber auch fleißig.Sie ist nicht nur klug, sondern auch fleißig.
The fixed pair is 'nicht nur … sondern auch'. 'Aber' introduces a contrast; 'sondern' adds extra positive information after a negation and is the required second half of this pair.
Ich will weder Kaffee noch ich will Tee.Ich will weder Kaffee noch Tee.
When 'weder … noch' connects two parallel elements (both direct objects here), link the parallel parts directly without repeating the whole clause.
