als vs. wenn: Talking About the Past
Two German words both translate to when in English, but in the past tense they are never interchangeable: als is for a single, one-time event, while wenn is for repeated or habitual past events. Getting this right immediately makes your German sound more natural.
This lesson focuses on the past tense only. You will learn a simple one-question test to choose the right word, practise the verb-final word order these clauses require, and avoid the most common mistakes English speakers make.
als – A Single Past Event
Use als when you describe a single, specific moment or event in the past. It happened once and is finished.
Als ich sechs Jahre alt war, zogen wir nach Hamburg. (When I was six, we moved to Hamburg.)
Key signals for als:
- It happened one time only.
- It is a completed, unique event.
- You can often pin it to a specific age, year, or moment.
The verb goes to the END of the als-clause:

wenn – Repeated or Habitual Past Events
Use wenn when something happened repeatedly or habitually in the past — every time a certain condition was met.
Wenn es regnete, blieben wir drinnen. (Whenever it rained, we stayed inside.)
Look for clue words like immer (always), jedes Mal (every time), oft (often), or manchmal (sometimes). They almost always signal wenn.

The one-question test: Can you replace when with whenever and keep the same meaning? → Use wenn. Did it happen just once? → Use als.
Word Order in als- and wenn-Clauses
Both als and wenn are subordinating conjunctions — they send the conjugated verb to the end of their clause.

With separable verbs, the prefix and stem reunite at the end: Als er ankam (not als er an kam).
When the subordinate clause comes first, invert the main clause (verb before subject):
- Als ich jung war, spielte ich viel Fußball.
- Ich spielte viel Fußball, als ich jung war.

Turning 18 happens exactly once. Single, one-time past events require 'als', not 'wenn'.

'Immer' tells you this happened repeatedly. Repeated past events need 'wenn'. 'Als' can only describe something that happened once.
Wann ich klein war, hatte ich Angst vor Hunden.Als ich klein war, hatte ich Angst vor Hunden.
'Wann' is a question word (Wann kommst du? — When are you coming?). To connect two events in a sentence, use 'als' or 'wenn', never 'wann'.

When the subordinate clause comes first, the main clause inverts: conjugated verb (spielte) must come directly before the subject (ich), not after it.
