Purpose Clauses: um … zu / damit

When you want to explain why you are doing something, German uses special purpose clauses. These answer the question "What for?" or "In order to do what?" — and mastering them will make your German sound much more natural.

There are two main structures: um … zu + infinitive (same subject) and damit + full clause (different subject). Knowing which one to choose is the key skill this lesson covers.

um … zu (same subject)

Use um … zu + infinitive when the subject of the main clause and the purpose clause is the same person or thing.

Structure: main clause + umzu + infinitive (at the end)

Ich lerne Deutsch, um in Berlin zu arbeiten. (I am learning German in order to work in Berlin.)

Key rules:

  • The infinitive goes to the very end of the sentence.
  • zu is placed directly before the infinitive.
  • With separable verbs, zu slots between the prefix and the stem: aufzumachen, einzuladen.
  • A comma before um is optional but common in writing.

damit (different subjects)

Use damit when the subject of the purpose clause is different from the subject of the main clause.

Structure: main clause, damit + new subject + … + conjugated verb (at the end)

Die Lehrerin spricht langsam, damit die Schüler sie verstehen. (The teacher speaks slowly so that the students understand her.)

Key rules:

  • Damit introduces a subordinate clause → the conjugated verb goes to the end.
  • A comma is always written before damit.
  • You can also use damit with the same subject, but um … zu is the more natural choice.

Choosing the right structure

The deciding factor is always: same subject or different subject?

Quick test: Try to translate with "in order to." If one subject works → um … zu. If a new person appears → damit.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

Ich lerne Deutsch, um ich in Deutschland arbeite.Ich lerne Deutsch, um in Deutschland zu arbeiten.

With um … zu there is no new subject and no conjugated verb — only zu + infinitive at the end of the clause.

Ich rufe an, damit einen Termin zu vereinbaren.Ich rufe an, um einen Termin zu vereinbaren.

When the subject stays the same, um … zu is correct. damit must be followed by a full clause with its own subject and a conjugated verb.

Sie spricht langsam, damit die Schüler sie verstehen zu können.Sie spricht langsam, damit die Schüler sie verstehen können.

In a damit clause the verb is already conjugated (and goes last). Never add zu — that only belongs in um … zu constructions.

Er spart, um ein Auto kaufen.Er spart, um ein Auto zu kaufen.

zu is mandatory in um … zu constructions. It cannot be dropped, even when the meaning feels obvious.
