Comparative Clauses (so … wie, als ob)
Comparing things is something we do constantly in everyday speech — whether two things are equal or one stands out from the other. In German, so … wie, als, and als ob let you express these comparisons precisely and naturally.
This lesson covers three key patterns: equality (so gut wie — as good as), inequality (besser als — better than), and hypothetical comparison (als ob er wüsste — as if he knew). Each has its own small rules, and once you see the logic, they click fast.
Equality: so … wie (as … as)
Use so + adjective/adverb + wie to say two things are equal. The adjective stays in its base (positive) form — no comparative endings.
Er ist so groß wie sein Bruder. — He is as tall as his brother.
For extra emphasis on exact equality, use genauso … wie:
Das ist genauso teuer wie vorher. — That is just as expensive as before.
For negative equality, add nicht before so:

Inequality: als (than)
Use als after a comparative adjective (base form + -er) to show that one thing is more or less than another.
Dieser Weg ist kürzer als der andere. — This path is shorter than the other.
⚠️ Critical rule: always use als, never wie, after a comparative form. Größer wie is a very common spoken error — avoid it in writing and formal speech.

Hypothetical comparison: als ob / als wenn (as if)
Use als ob or als wenn to describe how something appears or how someone behaves, even when it may not actually be true. Two rules apply:
- The mood switches to Konjunktiv II
- The verb moves to the end of the clause
Er tut so, als ob er alles wüsste. — He acts as if he knew everything.
You can also omit ob/wenn and place the verb directly after als (more literary style):
Er tut so, als wüsste er alles. (identical meaning)

⚠️ Common Mistakes
Er ist größer wie ich.Er ist größer als ich.
After a comparative form (-er ending), always use 'als', not 'wie'. The word 'wie' belongs only in the 'so … wie' equality structure with a base adjective.
Er tut so, als ob er schläft.Er tut so, als ob er schliefe.
'Als ob' requires Konjunktiv II, not the indicative. Using the indicative ('schläft') implies a real fact, which contradicts the hypothetical meaning of 'als ob'.
Er tut so, als ob wäre er müde.Er tut so, als ob er müde wäre.
After 'als ob', the clause uses standard subordinate word order: subject first, conjugated verb at the end. Do not invert subject and verb after 'als ob' — that inversion only works when you drop 'ob' entirely ('als wäre er müde').
Sie ist so klüger wie ihr Bruder.Sie ist so klug wie ihr Bruder.
In the 'so … wie' equality pattern, the adjective stays in its base (positive) form. Never add a comparative -er ending inside the 'so … wie' structure.
