Subordinate Clauses with weil & dass
Two of the most useful conjunctions in German are weil (because) and dass (that). They let you explain your reasons, share opinions, and report what people say — skills you need almost every day.
The rule is simple but easy to forget: both conjunctions push the conjugated verb to the very end of the clause. Master this one rule and your German sentences will instantly sound more natural.
weil — Expressing a Reason
weil means because and introduces a reason. In a normal main clause the verb sits in position 2. After weil the conjugated verb jumps to the last position in the clause.
Always place a comma before weil.

dass — Reporting Facts and Opinions
dass means that and introduces a complement clause. It frequently follows verbs of thinking, saying, knowing, and feeling.

Just like weil, dass sends the conjugated verb to the end, and a comma is required before it.

Verb-Final Order with Modals and Perfect Tense
When the subordinate clause contains two verbs (e.g. a modal + infinitive, or a perfect-tense auxiliary + past participle), the finite (conjugated) verb always comes last.

Tip: Think of it as a queue — all other elements line up, and the finite verb closes the door at the end.

⚠️ Common Mistakes
Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich bin krank.Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.
After weil the verb must go to the END of the clause. Leaving it in position 2 (as in a main clause) is the most frequent error English speakers make, because English word order does not change after 'because'.
Er sagt, dass er ist müde.Er sagt, dass er müde ist.
The same verb-final rule applies after dass. The verb ist must close the subordinate clause, not sit between subject and predicate adjective.
Sie kann nicht kommen, weil sie muss arbeiten.Sie kann nicht kommen, weil sie arbeiten muss.
When a modal verb is present in a weil- or dass-clause, the infinitive comes before the modal: arbeiten muss, not muss arbeiten.
Er sagt, weil er morgen kommt.Er sagt, dass er morgen kommt.
Use dass (not weil) after verbs of saying, thinking, and knowing. weil introduces a reason; dass introduces the content of what is said or thought.
